Locals go on the Great Lake Walk this Saturday

Alberni Valley Pennyworth Published: Thursday, September 17, 2009

At least two Valley residents will be among the hundreds of participants in the annual Great Lake Walk - a 56-kilomtre journey from Youbou to Lake Cowichan - this Saturday.

Shelley Harding, who has made the trek three times before (finishing for the first time last year) knows first time just how grueling an event it is. Kris Patterson will be stepping across the starting line at 5am in Youbou for the first time and he doesn't expect it to be easy.

Last year, 367 of those registered (441 of all ages) for the event went the distance around Cowichan Lake. Good luck to Shelley and Kris! "I'll be out to beat my time of 14 hours and 20 minutes this year," she vowed. "I'll be walking for the Museum again and if anyone wants to make a pledge just stop by and see Jean McIntosh." The money raised (over $800 last year) goes into a special fund for Museum projects.
