Developer puts out fundraising challenge

Since the Great Lake Walk was first held in 2002, over half a million dollars has been raised by participants for a wide variety of charities. Thomas Kreilein of Duncan, a developer who has proposed a 2,000-unit community for the old millsite in Youbou, is adding a challenging twist to this year’s Great Lake Walk. Kreilein has committed to donating $10 to Cowichan Lake Community Services every time someone rings the bell at the finish line of the Great Lake Walk. He will also donate another $10 per bell ring to the Cowichan Lake District Chamber of Commerce. “Isn’t that awesome,” said Carol Blatchford, manager of Community Services. “Our hope is to use it for our youth programs. When he told me about it, I said, ‘Okay, we’re all over that.’” For Kreilein, it was a natural thing to do. “It’s just something good to do for the community,” he said. “The chamber, which has supported me, has received less funding and it’s the same for Community Services.”
