This event is sanctioned by the Canadian Volkssport Federation (CVF), a member of the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV) and is eligible for the IVV achievement award program.

 


WELCOME TO THE GREAT LAKE WALK

The Great Lake Walk and Ultramarathon is a 56 km walk or run around beautiful Cowichan Lake on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This walking/running event takes place on the third Saturday in September each year. This year's walk is September 19th, 2009

NEW FEATURE

This year we will have the folks from SPORT COWICHAN join us at the finish line.

They will be giving us live coverage as you come down the homestretch. Be sure to tell your family and friends to watch on the Internet at: www.sportcowichan.com for your great finish.

2008 winners, as in other years are the numerous charities. To date, $483,000.00 has been raised. Contact one of the walkers to contribute to their charity. 2008 OFFICIAL RESULTS

JasWellard-finish.jpg Jason Wellard of Campbell River led the pack, coming across the Finish Line in just 4 hrs, 37 min. 58 sec. but others weren't far behind until the 366th walker finished the day at 14 hrs, 49 min.s 20 sec.

Lady Of the Lake Randi Lundberg, who finished the 56-kilometre Great Lake Walk and Ultramarathon in 8:01:12 and placed 43rd overall, saves her sore feet with a piggy back from friend Chelsea Schultz after finishing, as mom Angie Lundberg walks along. "I'm dead," she said. "I tried to beat eight hours." She knocked 16 minutes off her time from last year and jumped 20 spots in the standings to 43rd. There's Lots of fun for all ! !

The team from Pearson College in Victoria are taking the challenge again this year and are hoping to have at least 100 walkers. Watch for them on the route...

The Great Lake Walk is mentioned in Susan Reynolds’ new book ‘Walking Outside the Box’.
At least one walker has been inspired by the book to enter the 2007 Great Lake Walk. Ms. Reynolds says “It does my heart good to know that my words have encouraged them forward as walkers.”

SEE THE ROUTE
Walk or run from the community of Youbou on the north shore to Caycuse, Honeymoon Bay, Mesachie Lake on the south shore, finishing in the Town of Lake Cowichan. You will be greeted with warm welcomes along the way from the volunteers at the twelve rest stops. They supply food, drinks, porta-potties and more. More information.

FAMILY EVENT
Make the most of your visit to our friendly towns. Lots of fun activities are planned for you and your family including a pasta dinner and breakfast hosted by local organizations, bowling, skating, entertainment and more. The Walker Letter contains all the details.

HOW TO REGISTER
As well as individual walkers/runners, we strongly encourage team entries and corporate challenges. All the forms needed to register for the Great Lake Walk, as well as information on team incentives can be found on the Registration page. If you cannot print from this format, please contact us. We will be happy to mail the forms.

Follow the maps to the Cowichan Lake recreation area on Vancouver Island. The quiet scenic beauty of the majestic trees and mountains surrounding the lake will enthrall you. Get directions.

WALK/RUN FOR CHARITY
Great Lake Walk participants are encouraged to walk or run to raise funds for their charity of choice, although this is not mandatory. More than 200 charities and causes have benefited over the years.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER
Hundreds of volunteers dressed in bright yellow t-shirts host the walkers/runners in the 56 km Great Lake Walk and Ultramarathon each year. Their generous support has helped make this event a great success. New volunteers are always appreciated. Join the team.
